Jefferson County Historical Society brings back this historic take on America’s favorite game.
Dandridge, TN – For the second year in a row, the Jefferson County Historical Society is proud to present a vintage base ball game from Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball held at Field of Dreams in Dandridge, TN, on Saturday, April 5th at noon. The Knoxville Machinists will be taking on the Chattanooga Rag Tags.
If you have never been to a vintage base ball (note the two words) game, then you are in for a treat. Take a step back in time and witness the thrills of 1860s base ball in a captivating recreation of America’s favorite pastime in its formative years. The game will showcase rules, uniforms, equipment, and customs of the past, offering a glimpse into the sport’s rich history.
“We’re delighted to have this authentic experience come back to Jefferson County for a second year,” said Lauren Hurdle, Jefferson County’s Tourism Director. “This game provides a wonderful opportunity to learn more about America’s favorite past-time while enjoying a fun, family-friendly afternoon.”
Though the game is played on the same size and shape field as the modern game, there is a notable difference in the bases. Bases are 12” squares and are fabric bags filled with either sawdust or sand, with the exception of home plate. Home plate is a painted 12” disk. The score board is on the third base side of the field and the score is kept using chalk.
Spectators will soak in the charm of everything from period attire and equipment and humorous nicknames for players and the umpire to historic rules, gentlemanly play, and a traditional post-game celebration. It’s an afternoon you won’t want to miss.
