The Spirit of Nations Powwow, being held on the main campus of Jefferson County High School on Saturday, March 29th will feature a bark encampment like those historically used by the Cherokee and other southeastern peoples.
Sandy Brown, a cultural educator from Robbinsville, NC, along with her daughter Wahlalah, will
erect the encampment inside the entrance to the high school. Surrounding the bark structure will be many items of material culture, such as deer hides, baskets, war clubs, drums, masks, tools, and weapons that will be used to explain daily life among the southeastern peoples.
The goal of the mother/daughter team is to “teach the children of today the ways of yesterday.” They are passionate about sharing Native American history and culture with younger generations.
“Demonstrations and education are important parts of any Native historical events as they give
visitors a chance to speak to someone, ask any question they may have, and experience living history as we demonstrate what we may be working on at the time,” said Sandy Brown.
In addition to the back encampment, the powwow will feature American Indian arts and crafts for sale, Indian tacos, activities for children, competition powwow dancing, flute playing, a silent auction, American Indian craft demonstrations, and a performance by world famous hoop dancer Eddie Swimmer.
Jefferson County High School is located at 115 W. Dumplin Valley Road, Dandridge, TN, 37725.
Admission is $7 for adults and $2 for children. Veterans and active-duty military personnel are admitted free.
