As the federal government shutdown continues, uncertainty often looms over our national parks. While a government shutdown typically forces the temporary suspension of non-essential federal services, leaving visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) wondering about their travel plans, our local communities have come together to ensure the park’s beauty and accessibility remain largely unaffected.

What a Government Shutdown Means

During a federal shutdown, non-essential services are typically suspended, which often means serious disruptions for national park visitors, including:

  • Closure of Visitor Centers and Facilities: Ranger stations, visitor centers, restrooms, and some campgrounds might close.
  • Reduced Staffing: While law enforcement and emergency services remain, interpretive rangers and maintenance crews could be furloughed.
  • Impact on Services: Essential services like trash collection and trail maintenance could be severely limited.

Our Community Rises Up

The local communities surrounding the Great Smoky Mountains National Park understand the vital role the park plays in our region’s culture and commerce. In a powerful demonstration of community spirit, a unified coalition has secured emergency funding to keep the park fully operational during the shutdown period. This effort is not funded by Washington, but by partners right here in the region.

This collaboration to preserve access and protect the local economy was spearheaded by a diverse coalition of partners, including local governments, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the State of Tennessee, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, and Friends of the Smokies.

Know Before You Go

Thanks to the dedication of these groups, visitors can enjoy the Smokies as usual! The local agreement ensures that:

  • All facilities remain open. Visitor centers are staffed and fully operational.
  • Roadways, restrooms, trails, and campgrounds are fully operational.

What You Can Do to Help
