Indian Creek Productions, Inc., sponsor of the Spirit of Nations Powwow held at Jefferson County High School in Dandridge, has been awarded a Rural Arts Program (RAP) grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. This is the fourth consecutive grant the powwow has received through the RAP program which provides funds for diverse arts projects in rural counties.

“We truly appreciate the support of the Tennessee Arts Commission as we educate the public by
hosting Indigenous artists, craftspeople, musicians, and dancers,” said Dr. Mark Finchum, president of Indian Creek Productions.

“Jefferson County businesses and government officials have also been very supportive. It’s been
great to have guests join us from all around the region, many coming from out-of-state,” Finchum
added.

Lauren Hurdle, director of tourism for Jefferson County, said, “Jefferson County Tourism has been a proud sponsor of the Spirit of Nations Powwow for many years. The Powwow has not only brought many visitors to our area over the years but shines a spotlight on our region’s Native American history and culture. It is wonderful that the event can continue to thrive through the vital funding that the TN Arts Commission Grant provides.”

The 2024 RAP grant made it possible for the powwow to host the White Mountain Apache Crown Dancers from Whiteriver, Arizona.

“The Apache dancers were a tremendous crowd favorite. Our organization looks forward to
announcing our special guests for 2025. Once again, our guests will be excited!” said Finchum.

The Spirit of Nations Powwow will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Jefferson County
High School in Dandridge.

Before a RAP grant can be awarded, the commission considers how well the proposed project demonstrates artistic, cultural, or educational value to the community served. The commission also takes into consideration how well an organization demonstrates financial responsibility and a broad base of support.

Funding for the RAP grants comes through the sales of specialty license plates in Tennessee.
