Nestled in the heart of Jefferson County and Lakeside of the Smokies, Cherokee Lake beckons travelers with a unique blend of outdoor adventures and historical significance. Let’s embark on a journey into the past, exploring the story behind Cherokee Lake before diving into the recreational activities and charming accommodations waiting for visitors.

The History of Cherokee Lake

Named after the Cherokee Tribe that lived in the area, Cherokee Lake was created when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built Cherokee Dam to generate hydroelectric power in 1941. Hydroelectric power was crucial during World War II to support the Manhattan Project that was taking place just down the road in Oak Ridge, TN. Surprisingly, it only took TVA sixteen months to build Cherokee Dam. This important contribution propelled the war effort and was part of the foundation for future development in the Tennessee Valley.

Jefferson City, home of Cherokee Lake, has its own unique history. The town has been a staple of East Tennessee since the late 1700’s. It is rich in history and one of the largest towns in Jefferson County. When you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Historic Mossy Creek district- a thriving area with shops and restaurants located in the heart of Jefferson City. Explore our town’s history through driving trails and historical sites to learn more about the vital part Jefferson City and Cherokee Lake have played in shaping the area.
